As a pre cursor to the main festival, for those staying on Thursday night, we hosted The Lighters for an evening session in the Backpackers Courtyard, followed by a chilled Open Mic Night / Jam Session around the fire pits.  Festival goers brought instruments, something to shake, hands to clap, a voice to sing and/or laughter.

Martin Carthy

Martin Carthy - Sunday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 - One of folk music’s greatest innovators, he is a ground-breaking acoustic and electric guitarist, ballad singer and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position. Perhaps most significant of all though, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, on both sides of the Atlantic.

Having been recognised with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, and described by Q Magazine as ‘arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector and editor of them all’, this is truly an opportunity not to be missed.

Gentlemen of Few

Gentlemen of Few - Sunday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 - Closing our festival this year are BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominees Gentlemen of Few. They were formed along the South-East coast of England in 2009, founded by four young musicians who each found a vast pleasure in their ensemble work as students. They shared a broad and varied history of musical experience between them, spanning multitudes of genres, styles and formats, opening up plenty of avenues for them to explore. Unknowingly, they drew close and familiar with the raucous energy and excitement they unearthed from American Roots, Rock and Bluegrass songs and these they played loud and fast. Though, in this time, powerful stories and meaningful words that spoke to them were collected from areas of music like folk and blues, which followed them closely when the boys began putting pen to paper. The Gents would like to invite you to join them on their adventures and share in this very human of things, music.

Kitty Macfarlane

Kitty Macfarlane - Saturday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 -

Man the Lifeboats

Man the Lifeboats - Saturday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 - Man the Lifeboats play raucous, upbeat folk music for those who like a drink with their tunes, their objective to play raucous, upbeat folk music, to drag traditional folk tunes kicking and screaming into the 21st century, to craft songs with big choruses that tell stories. Songs with straight-up lyrics, pounding bass lines, lilting mandolin and fiddle melodies and stomping beats, Man The Lifeboats have cultivated a sound that would not be out of place at a party at the end of the world. Come join the party!

Morganway

Morganway - Friday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 - Our Friday headliners at this year’s Deepdale Festival are an East Anglian band who are simply unmissable. Having seemingly been too rock for folk, too pop for indie, too indie for country, we think they are now just too good to miss. With influences stretching from the ‘70s West Coast rock scene through Brit rock, folk and modern Americana, Chris our Festival Director can hear suggestions of both Heart and Fleetwood Mac in their pomp, alongside inflections of classic modern electric folk. He is sure it’s safe to say Deepdale Festival goers will not be disappointed.

Cobbler Bob String Band

Cobbler Bob String Band - Friday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 - Cobbler Bob feature some of the finest acoustic musicians on the local scene coming together to play vibrantly rootsy Americana and bluegrass. With acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin and double bass, the group might have a quintessentially traditional instrumental line-up, but are equally as happy riffing on Led Zep, The Beatles and Prince. With the simply outstanding musicians of the acclaimed Shackleton Trio, together with Joe Hartley on double bass and Adam Clark on banjo, this a musical experience you won’t want to miss.

Fran & Flora

Fran & Flora - Saturday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 - Violinist Flora Curzon & cellist Francesca Ter-Berg take Eastern European / Eurasian folk & infuse it with the quiet-loud sense of post rock exploration that unites the likes of Mogwai & Jambinai. Their debut album Unfurl has gained widespread critical acclaim & they have played live on BBC Radio 3, Cerys Matthews’ 6 Music show, Soho Radio & Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM.

Fred's House

Fred's House - Saturday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 - Fred’s House are an award winning band based in Cambridge. They make summery, 70’s West Coast inspired folk/rock but have their own distinctively fresh sound that is very much part of now. This group of musicians have the rare ability to sweep you away with their gorgeous harmonies, moving lyrics, infectious melodies and uplifting grooves. Among their many influences are the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Lissie, Missy Higgins and Janice Joplin.

Smith & Brewer

Smith & Brewer - Sunday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 - Ben Smith and Jimmy Brewer met at an event organised by Joan Armatrading for the acts she had chosen to support her on her 2015 tour. Although they originally planned to just write together, they soon realised that their playing styles and voices complemented each other and they started playing together after their inaugural gig supporting Joan Armatrading in front of a thousand-strong crowd. Since then, they have played together all over the UK, notably as the support act to 10cc and Ralph McTell on their 2018 U.K tours, at Fairport’s Cropredy Convention 2018, the 2018 Cambridge Folk Festival and the UK Americana Music Association Showcase in 2017 and 2019, as well as at AmericanaFest in Nashville in 2017.

The Shackleton Trio

The Shackleton Trio - Sunday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 - Wonderfully talented Norfolk-based folk trio, with the unique folk voice of Georgia Shackleton complemented by the exceptional guitar of Aaren Bennett and the sublime mandolin playing of Nic Zuppardi. With their second alum under their belt, ‘Fen, Farm and Deadly Water’, their songwriting and playing has moved to a deeper even more assured level. Simply wonderful!

Tilly Moses Band

Tilly Moses Band - Friday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 - Following her spellbinding solo appearance on the Orchard Stage at last year's Festival, we are delighted to welcome Tilly back to Deepdale, this time with her full band on our main Brick Barn Stage. This promises to be something very special as they gear up to launch her newly recorded second studio album. A truly unique voice on the English folk scene, her acclaimed debut album 'Alight & Adrift' has been one of Chris' favourite records over the past year.

Cut Throat Francis

Cut Throat Francis - Saturday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 - CTF sing songs about failing to be successful, responsible grown-ups on folk instruments, sometimes in swing rhythms mostly with Eastern European flavours, so they’re a sort of Balkan swing band from Bristol. Their new EP ‘This Garden’s Never Gonna Grow’ is just out.

Das Fenster & The Alibis

Das Fenster & The Alibis - Saturday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 - Inspired by 40's Film Noir, The art & movies of the Weimar Republic, Gangsters, Voodoo, Bertold Brecht & Marlon Brando. Das Fenster heard Rock’n’Roll in a Belfast bar one night, and all thoughts of joining the priesthood went out the window for good. Instead he turned to playing guitar, womanising, and dabbling with Voodoo! Unmissable!!

Based in East Anglia, singer, musician and writer, John Ward, has established himself as a prolific and formidable songwriter on the folk, roots and acoustic music scene and has 8 critically-acclaimed CDs and a published book to his credit. John writes in a variety of styles, and has been commissioned to write songs and music for various projects, but his heart is in folk and roots music. John's songs have been crafted from his life in a port town that has seen more than its fair share of change. After a life travelling and making music, Les Woodley (double bass and mandolin) joined John and renowned guitarist, Stephen Mynott. With Lynne’s accordian and whistles and their powerful harmonies, the band’s performances are authentic, entertaining and from the heart. John’s unique style of bodhran playing and show-stopping solos are a live favourite and together they delight audiences across the UK.

Lucy Grubb

Lucy Grubb - Saturday - Deepdale Festival | 26th to 29th September 2019 - “Songwriting of the highest order, Lucy has managed to make Country feel like pop.” - Gary Standley, BBC Music Introducing in Norfolk. Lucy Grubb is a singer/songwriter from Norwich blending modern Americana with Country undertones. Inspired by the likes of Johnny Cash, Lucy's understated guitar rhythms and Country trilled vocal melodies hark back to tried and tested traditional Country song writing, expressing grief, sorrow and heartbreak. With nods to songwriter Paul Simon, Lucy focuses on writing about the truth in a way that sets her apart from other songwriters. Like Simon, Lucy often likes to add a spin to the tone of her lyrics, sometimes witty or sarcastic to enhance the storytelling experience. Ultimately what makes her songs stand out is the ability to take them and create meaning unique to the individual.

A combination of Florence and the Machine meets Janis Ian meets Aretha Franklin, Field’s voice is distinct and unusual. Her signature sound is a potent mix of lyricism and fire, heart-felt issues and tender constructions, she has a unique textured blues infused voice and soulful vocal delivery style. Rooted in folk but having experimented with blues, country, jazz and with strong elements of soul coming through on her latest release, Josie is no ordinary singer songwriter. She calls her sound ‘Indie Soul’ aptly the title of her brand new solo album which garnered her ninth SAMA nomination for Best Adult Contemporary Album last year. Indie Soul is a modern fusion of acoustic meets digital with a deep 60’s soul flavour that tugs on the heart strings.

Drawing on influences such as John Martyn, Roy Harper and Laura Marling, Katie Spencer creates modern progressive folk music which owes as much the songwriters of the 60’s acoustic music heyday as it does the East Riding landscape where she has always felt a strong spiritual connection. Her striking vocals and deft songwriting are backed by an evocative and complex guitar style that takes her music to places that are both esoteric and beautiful.
