Benjamin Appl - Baritone and James Baillieu - Piano

Programme: Selected songs by Schubert, Liszt and Mahler, including five songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn and Five Songs Op.40 by Schumann set to texts by Hans Christian Andersen.

Benjamin Appl was born in 1982 in Regensburg where he was a member of the Regensburger Domspatzen, the renowned choir of the city’s cathedral. He first studied in Munich before coming to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Highlights of his 2017/2018 season include performances in Germany, the UK, Seattle and recitals in Glasgow, at the Lille Opera, the Auditorium du Louvre, Hong Kong and the Netherlands. Together with his compatriots, the soprano Diana Damrau and the conductor Christian Thielemann, he took part in one of the most important musical events in Germany, the televised annual concert from the Frauenkirche, Dresden to mark the beginning of Advent 2017.

James Baillieu was born in South Africa. He studied at Cape Town University before moving to London and the Royal Academy of Music, where he teaches today. He first came to prominence by winning a number of prizes for accompaniment in major song competitions, including the Kathleen Ferrier Award, the Wigmore Hall Singing Competition and others. He has a remarkably busy performing schedule, working not just with the leading singers of his generation, but with young musicians too, notably at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he is International Tutor in Piano Accompaniment.
