These Shepherds Huts are newly built for 2013, locally in
Norfolk by The English Shepherds Hut Company -
www.englishshepherdshut.co.uk They are built to the highest standard
from high grade timber and have full insulation, comfy furnishings and a
versatile wood burning stove.
Each Shepherds Hut sleeps up to 4 people. You will find one
fitted double bed, along with a day bed opposite which can be used as either a
sofa, single bed, or pulled out to a full size double bed. The accommodation is
both comfortable and warm all year round.
The shepherd's hut or wagon was a 19th century forerunner to
today's campervan. Generally, all farming land owners in South East England in
the 19th century employed shepherds as sheep dung was vital to keep the thin,
chalky soil fertile enough to grow crops. This was before manure sprays or
chemical fertilizers were around. Therefore the sheep would be moved from field
to field, plot to plot in order to graze and fertilize the land ready for
ploughing. As such the shepherds needed a home from home to keep them sheltered
and supplied for the extremely physical task of moving the flocks daily,
sometimes for entire seasons.
The huts of the time weren't particularly comfortable - hardly
any insulation (the corrugated tin outsides would collect condensation and very
quickly go mouldy otherwise!) and the shepherds would likely have had a stove, a
flask of liquor, and even a couple of sheep to keep them warm at night! Features
like stable doors and windows on all four walls allowed the shepherds to keep an
eye on the flock from the safety of the hut and the classic design, including
the trademark iron wheels, meant that the hut remains distinctive - in fact many
original models have survived to be renovated today.
Shepherd Hut prices include:
- One double bed
- One day bed, able to convert to double bed
- Bedding for 4 people
- Wood Burning Stove
- One bag of fuel and kindling **
- BBQ outside for cooking
- Picnic bench
Check in is from 2pm and checkout by 10am
We know it’s not always possible but we recommend trying to
arrive before sunset, as customers need to be shown in to their Shepherds Hut,
and this is easier when day light. |
